Dozens of addresses have been searched by police in Leeds as the hunt continues for a wanted man. Craig Smith is wanted in connection with threats to kill and firearms offences.

The 47-year-old from Crossgates had been released on licence in September last year after serving part of a sentence for drugs offences and driving without insurance. He is now wanted on recall to prison following an incident on August 20. Today the police helicopter gave support to officers as they followed a potential lead in Potternewton. It was the latest in a series of searches at various addresses over the past two weeks.

Police searched a home in Scott Hall Road as part of the ongoing hunt for Craig Smith.

They included a property in Scott Hall Lane which was the scene of police activity on August 21. Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Bryar, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “We have been making extensive enquiries to trace Craig Smith, and this has so far included searches of 27 addresses across Leeds.

The far-right British National Party has posted leaflets to people living near the West Yorkshire town where Labour MP Jo Cox was killed, accusing her of taking “misguided action” by “helping Muslims”, the Commons has heard.

Labour’s Paula Sherriff said the “horrendous” leaflets, which had gone to her constituents in Dewsbury, said Mrs Cox was wrong to help people who may go on to join Islamic State, also known as Isis.

Mrs Cox was shot and stabbed in Birstall on June 16, a week before the EU referendum.

Former BNP member Jack Buckby is to contest the by-election in the Batley and Spen constituency Mrs Cox represented, despite commitments from the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Ukip not to field a candidate.

Home Office Minister Karen Bradley committed to meeting Ms Sherriff to discuss the “utterly unacceptable” leaflets and to look at what “specific action” can be taken against the BNP.

During Ms Bradley’s statement on hate crime, Ms Sherriff said: “Many members will be aware that my constituency sits right next door to Batley and Spen.

“Yesterday people in my constituency received a leaflet from the BNP saying Jo Cox took misguided action by helping Muslims in the country who may now go on to join Isis, alongside some other horrendous allegations.

“Then I have received a significant number of communications from constituents, one - a seven year-old Muslim girl - was told on Friday, I’ve removed the expletives from this for the purpose of this House, ‘it was the best day ever today, go home all of you’ to her and her family.

“And I am continuing to receive a number of similar incidents.

Polish shopkeeper in Leeds taken to hospital after ‘racially aggravated incident’

POLICE ARE investigating a racially aggravated incident involving a Leeds shopkeeper.

Reports on social media said the Polish man had been attacked and told to “go back to his country”, with some saying the floor was covered in blood.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were investigating comments made towards the shopkeeper, but said he had not been physically attacked.

Inspector Jon Brady, who heads neighbourhood policing in north-west Leeds, said they were called to Bramley Shopping Centre at 10.18am yesterday (June 28) after a male shopkeeper was taken ill.

“Officers established that a short time beforehand a man had made comments to the victim in his shop,” he said.

“The victim, who has a pre-existing heart condition, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance but is due to be released later today after being monitored. We are satisfied that no physical assault took place. We are treating the incident as a racially-aggravated public order offence and our investigation is ongoing.”

Leeds votes ‘remain’ in EU ballot by tiniest of margins - as rest of Yorkshire says ‘bye bye Brussels’

Yorkshire voters have piled on the misery for the Remain camp - with huge swathes of the region favouring a Brexit.

Leeds voted to remain in the EU by the tiniest of margins - just 2,389 votes.

But Wakefield opted out by a massive margin, 116,165 votes to 58,877, and a 71.2 per cent turnout.

The Yorkshire and Humber region as a whole also voted out.

In total, 2.7m votes were cast in the region, with a turnout of just under 70 per cent.

There were a total of 1,580,937 votes for Leave and 1,158,298 for remain, a significant difference of 422,639 votes.

There was a sombre tone this morning from key ‘remain’ figures at Leeds Arena, the headquarters for the wider Yorkshire and Humber counts, as it received a drubbing in much of the wider county and country.

With the final round of results still due, Britain looked to be heading for an exit from the European Union,

Leeds was the counting base for 21 local authorities in the region.

The final count for Yorkshire and the Humber will now be fed into the national total.

With a total electorate in the region of almost four million, some commentators had suggested that the Yorkshire and Humber vote could be the clincher for the whole referendum result.

However in the end it was all about the Brexit surge,

Man accused of murdering MP Jo Cox makes Old Bailey appearance

The man accused of murdering Labour MP Jo Cox has been remanded in custody after appearing before a senior judge at the Old Bailey.
Mrs Cox, 41, died after being shot and stabbed in the street outside her constituency surgery in Birstall, last Thursday.
Thomas Mair, 52, from Lowood Lane, Birstall, is charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.
At an initial hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday, Mair refused to give his name, instead saying he was called "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain".
When asked to confirm he was Thomas Mair at the Old Bailey today, he replied: "Yes, I am."
He made his first crown court appearance before Mr Justice Sweeney via video link from top security Belmarsh prison.
Grey-bearded Mair sat with his arms folded beside a prison officer. He wore beige trousers and a white long-sleeved t-shirt.
There was no application for bail and he was remanded in custody.
